講演概要
The paper briefly addresses some of the key issues researched in contemporary South African media studies, thus the focus is on media regulation and freedom of expression, globalisation, media and the (African) public sphere, and media and identity in a multiracial society. It situates the South African media system in the context of digitisation and today’s digital public (mass) communication culture. In this regard interactivity and interconnectivity are described as key (technical) characteristics of today’s mediated communication. This is explicitly expressed in and by the social media with profound consequences for (South African) journalism and the nature of contemporary public communication with stylistics markers, such as (social media) communication being reactivist, paradoxical, personalised, rhetorical and ritualistic, fragmented, intertextual, repetitive and ambiguous. It is argued that these stylistic traits of (social media) communication determine the overall character of the South African mediasphere of mediated communication. All of the above are, however, set against the multicultural, digital divide and diverse state of the South African society.
