◇BAIRALとは
BAIRALは、東京大学Beyond AI推進機構B’AI Global Forumの若手RA（リサーチ・アシスタント）が主体となり、月に一回のペースで開催している研究会です。B’AI Global Forumでは、AI社会におけるジェンダー平等とマイノリティの権利保障という社会目標の実現に向けて研究を進めております。その一環として、BAIRALではデジタル情報技術と社会の関係について理解を深めるために、隔月、様々なゲストスピーカーの方にお話しいただいております。

H・ティティローラ・オロジェデ氏（ナイジェリア国立オープン大学 哲学科 准教授・学科長）

◇趣旨
　2022年11月に生成系AI（GenAI）の一種であるChatGPTが登場して以来、人工知能（AI）は教育、医療、産業、農業など、あらゆる分野に影響を与える注目の技術となっています。その影響はほとんど全ての場面に及んでいます。こうした状況を受け、学術界、国際機関、民間企業などからAIの倫理に関する提案が300件以上も出されています。これらの提案は、AIの恩恵をいかに公共の利益のために活用できるかに焦点を当てています。
しかし、その多くは1956年のダートマス会議を起源とする西洋中心的な視点に偏っており、非西洋社会におけるAIの歴史的ルーツや価値観に目を向けた提案はほとんど見られません。
AIの前段階ともいえる思想は存在していたのでしょうか？ そうした思想は、AIの「倫理設計」にどのような影響を与えるのでしょうか？ 本講演では、AIの脱植民地化に関する視点が提示されます。アジアやアフリカの視点から見たAIの初期の歴史に触れつつ、偏見やステレオタイプ、排除といった長年の課題に加え、ウブントゥ哲学の知見を用いながら、ジェンダーと技術、そして歴史的に周縁化されてきた集団や地域との交差性について考察します。講演者は、真に有効なAI倫理の確立には、先住民の視点、脆弱な立場の人々、そしてグローバルサウスを考慮することが不可欠であると主張します。

The 3rd BAIRAL Research Meeting for Fiscal Year 2025
“Reconsidering the Origin of AI in ‘Ethics by Design’”

 

◇BAIRAL（B’AI RA League）
BAIRAL is a study group by young research assistants (RA) of the B’AI Global Forum of the Institute for AI and Beyond at the University of Tokyo. Aiming to achieve gender equality and a guarantee of rights for minorities in the AI era, this study group examines relationships between digital information technology and society. BAIRAL organizes research meetings every other month with guest speakers in a variety of fields.

Dr. H. Titilola OLOJEDE, Assistant Professor and Head of the Department of Philosophy at the National Open University of Nigeria

◇Abstract
Since the launch of ChatGPT, a form of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) in November of 2022, artificial intelligence (AI) has become topical with its influence permeating many sectors, including education, healthcare, industry, and Agriculture. There is hardly any endeavour where its impact is not felt. Based on this, there are over 300 proposals from academics, inter-governmental entities, and private companies on the ethics of AI, that is, how its benefits might be harnessed for the common good. Among these numerous proposals, hardly would one see a proposal that considers AI’s historical roots and values from non-Western societies, as most, if not all, are Western-centric in line with the popular ‘origin’ of AI from the 1956 Dartmouth conference.

However, are there ideas that are precursors to AI? How might these ideas impact the ‘ethics by design’ of AI? The speaker presents thoughts on decolonising AI. She discusses the early history of AI from Asian and African perspectives. Drawing on perennial issues of bias, stereotypes and exclusion, and using insights from the Ubuntu philosophy, she examines the intersection of gender with technology and other historically marginalised groups and regions. The speaker posits that an adequate AI ethics cannot but consider indigenous perspectives, vulnerable populations and the Global South.
