Future Factory of ASOBI: Students’ Hackathon

A two-week hackathon “Future Factory of ASOBI (play)” for students at the University of Tokyo was held for two weeks from February 27 to March 13. In this hackathon, the participants formed teams, worked on thinking about what “play” means and making prototypes of future play.

On February 27, Assistant Professor Daiya Aida gave a lecture on the idea and definition of “play” itself. On March 1, Assistant Professor Yuki Anzai gave a lecture on methods for creating “play”. Through these two days of lectures and work, the participants formed teams with people who wanted to join each other and worked on an ideathon and implementation for an interim presentation and a final presentation.

On the technical and design support days, which were mainly held on Monday and Friday, we invited designers and engineers as advisers to hear student ideas and give technical support. At the interim presentation, the ideas and progress of the play being made by each team were presented in a presentation format, and questions and comments were given to students by juries invited from companies and the university. Questions and comments were also exchanged among the participants.

At the final presentation, each team presented a prototype as a final product and a promotion video. Every team was serious about “play” and was engaged in creating “play” with their own convictions.

After all teams had announced, it was time for Touch & Try to actually experience the play that the teams had created. The participants were able to experience and enjoy the play created by the other teams. The final products were reviewed by a jury. As a result, three teams were awarded. The winning team’s products are introduced on this page.

Every team had unique and interesting points. We hope that the participants will continue to collaborate with the new acquaintances made at this hackathon to further develop their play and start new activities.
