From November 16th (Thursday) to November 20th (Monday), we held the “University of Tokyo iii Exhibition 2023 Gakugei Movement.” This media art exhibition is organized as part of one of the classes held in the GSII. A distinctive feature is that students take the lead in everything from conceptualization to exhibition production and management. This was the 25th time such an exhibition has been held. A record-breaking 29 works were exhibited, spread across all four venues, with over 2,200 visitors in total.

The exhibition adopted the concept of “Gakugei Movement.” Aimed at connecting academia and art, it expressed each exhibitor’s fusion of academic and artistic thoughts. Works utilizing various technologies such as VR and generative AI were displayed, showcasing their interpretation of the form of Gakugei.

On November 18th (Saturday), we invited Professor Asa Ito from the Tokyo Institute of Technology, Professor Fuyuki Yamakawa, an artist and associate professor at Akita University of Art, and Professor Yasuaki Kakei, who was involved in this exhibition as a GSII faculty member, and held a talk event on the theme of “The Relationship between Academia and Art.” With the exhibition as a starting point, a rich and insightful discussion unfolded on academia and art from various perspectives.

Benefiting from a large number of attendees, we are delighted to have successfully concluded the exhibition. Much was learned through communication with the visitors.
