「関東大震災から100年―映画『キャメラを持った男たちー関東大震災を撮るー』」Report: Documentary Film Archive Project 14th Research Screening
“100 Years after the Great Kanto Earthquake - 'Men with Cameras: Filming the Great Kanto Earthquake'”
記録映画のアーカイブを活用して、映像を用いた多様な研究・教育の可能性を再発見する記録映画アーカイブ・プロジェクト（丹羽美之研究室）主催、第14回研究上映会 「関東大震災から100年―映画『キャメラを持った男たちー関東大震災を撮るー』」を、2023年6月28日に開催しました。
コロナ禍での中断を経て3年ぶりに再開した今回は、100年前の関東大震災を撮影したキャメラマンを主人公にしたドキュメンタリー映画を劇場公開に先駆けて上映しました。本作は第3回研究上映会「関東大震災の記録」を機に企画・構想された作品であり、震災直後に現場に駆けつけた３人のキャメラマンが撮影した映像の「文脈」を、本人の手記や親族の証言、専門家の協力によって時間や場所を特定することで、辿っていきます。
上映後トークとして、第1部では出演者でもある国立映画アーカイブ客員研究員のとちぎあきらさんから、進行中の関東大震災映像のデジタルアーカイブ化と本作をつなぐものについて、第2部ではとちぎさんと演出をされた井上実さんから、制作のエピソードや「通りすがりの」キャメラマンたちが撮ったもの・撮らなかったもののメディアとしての意味などについて伺いました。
学生、研究者、映像制作者、メディア関係者など20-80代まで幅広い年齢層の110名の熱心な参加者が集まり、質疑応答も活発でした。「ビジュアルを後世に残そうとしていた先人の思いに触れて感銘を受けた」「記録映画のアーカイブ化は、その映像を通じて映し出されたこと、映し出されなかったことを読み取ることを可能にする文化的歴史的作業だと感じた」といった感想が寄せられました。

The 14th Research Screening “100 Years after the Great Kanto Earthquake – ‘Men with Cameras: Filming the Great Kanto Earthquake’” was held on June 28, 2023. It was organized by the Documentary Film Archive Project (Yoshiyuki Niwa Laboratory), which aims to rediscover various research and educational possibilities using film footage by utilizing documentary film archives.
Resuming after three years following the Covid pandemic, this featured a documentary film about the cameramen who filmed the Great Kanto Earthquake 100 years ago. The film was planned on the occasion of the 3rd Research Screening “Recording the Great Kanto Earthquake” and traces the “context” of the footage shot by three cameramen who rushed to the scene immediately after the disaster, by identifying when and where the scenes were shot through the cameramen’s own memoirs, testimony from relatives and the cooperation of experts.
After the screening, Akira Tochigi, a visiting researcher at the National Film Archive, told us about the ongoing digital archiving of footage from the Great Kanto Earthquake and this film. Afterwards, Tochigi and director Minoru Inoue shared episodes from making this film and their thoughts on what the ‘passing-by’ cameramen did and did not film.
This event was attended by 110 participants, ranging in age from their 20s to 80s, including students, researchers, filmmakers and media professionals, and there was a lively Q&A session. Comments included: ‘I was impressed by the desire of our predecessors to preserve visuals for future generations’ and ‘I felt that archiving documentary films is a cultural and historical task that enables us to read what was and was not projected through the images.’
