On March 5th 2019, an open house was held at the Naemura Laboratory of the University of Tokyo. The event consisted of two parts: a series of oral research presentations, followed by a poster session with 36 participants including a number of graduates from the laboratory.

The projects exhibited covered a range of topics. One striking example was the presentation of a unique network structure for solving the problem of how artificial intelligence can be made to judge whether an object displayed on a screen is “something unknown”. This highly advanced research project has been selected for the leading image recognition conference CVPR. Other projects included a system whereby QR codes are displayed only when taking photos with a smartphone by oscillating the color tone at 60Hz and an application for the memorization of English vocabulary using short stories read by a voice actor.

The open day displayed the Naemura laboratory’s outstanding achievements in the skillful use of both hardware and software to create new media experiences. It was also an impressive demonstration of the depth of the laboratory’s research on the necessary technological elements.
