Exhibition "Shinobazu Wonder 12: The Meetings and Partings of Artists in The Meiji Period" was held

From July 13th until 15th, an exhibition titled “Shinobazu Wonder 12: The Meetings and Partings of Artists in The Meiji Period” was held at Denchu Hirakushi House and Atelier in Yanaka, Tokyo. Organized by “Shinobazu Cultural Resource Project”, a collaborative project, started in 2013, among Shunya Yoshimi Laboratory, Hidenori Watanave Laboratory, and Toppan Printing CO. LTD., the exhibition utilized the old house of sculptor Denchu Hirakushi and digital technology including Liquid Galaxy and AR technology to reproduce twelve Meiji artists’ life trajectories and activities in the Shinobazu area centering around Hongo and Ueno.

The artists are namely, Natsuo Kanō, Kyōsai Kawanabe, Gahō Hashimoto, Seiko Okuhara, Gyokuzan Asahi, Kōun Takamura, Ernest Fenollosa, Tenshin Okakura, Taikan Yokoyama, Denchū Hirakushi, Kiyokata Kaburagi, and Hakutei Ishii. Through the wide screens of Liquid Galaxy, panels, gallery talks, and AR city walks, this exhibition delineated the close relationship between the artists and the local community. In addition to presenting the potential of digital technology, the exhibition also endeavored to develop connections with Yanaka Cemetery, Tokyo National Museum, Tokyo University of the Arts, memorial museums and other cultural facilities in the neighbourhood.
