Professor Nakao received “Docomo Mobile Science Award”

Professor Akihiro Nakao received the “Award for Excellence in Advanced Technology” in the “Docomo Mobile Science Awards” hosted by Mobile Communications Fund. An award ceremony took place at ANA InterContinental Hotel Tokyo on October 20.

In the “Open Flow” protocol developed in the United States as an SDN (Software-Defined Networking) technology in network virtualization, the two functions of packet forwarding (data plane) and routing (control plane) were separated, and the control plane was softwarized. In contrast, Professor Nakao proposed Deeply Programmable Network (DPN), in which the data plane is also softwarized, and took a leading role in the project to demonstrate it empirically. The prize was given in recognition of numerous additional achievements, including the trial development of nodes (a basis of SDN technology) and contributions to SDN/NFV (Network Function Virtualization) standardization.
