The final exhibition of Shunji Yamanaka Lab

The final exhibition for the lab of Professor Shunji Yamanaka, who will retire at the end of the academic year 2022, began on November 17 at the Institute of Industrial Science, Building S on Komaba Research Campus. This exhibition, titled “Mirai no Genga (Drawings of the Future)” is the culmination of Yamanaka Lab, whose research focused on designing and prototyping the interface between humans and technology.

Upon entering the exhibition hall, one’s eyes are first drawn to the numerous sketches by Professor Yamanaka. And in the main exhibit room, you will see various projects, from prosthetic legs and hands to “bio-likeness” robots, that began from sketches and eventually were given shape. In another exhibit room, visitors will find geometric structures and robot prototypes that were created as part of Yamanaka Lab’s research into the possibilities of 3D printer technology.

A recognized product designer before entering academia, Professor Yamanaka joined the University of Tokyo in April 2013 after working at Keio University for four years from 2008. At the Interfaculty Initiative in Information Studies/Graduate School of Interdisciplinary Information Studies, he has been conducting research and teaching as a faculty member in the Emerging design and informatics course. “Design essentially makes use of both scientific knowledge and artistic insight into human sensibilities. III has been a wonderful environment for my work, because people from diverse fields work together to create something new,” he said.

The exhibition also features works by Yamanaka Lab graduates. Professor Yamanaka asked the alumni to showcase their most representative, favorite works that opened their future. The final exhibition of Yamanaka Lab will continue through December 4.
