歴史的転換を記録する『検証 コロナと五輪』刊行までの活動Recording the Historical Shift: Behind the Publication of "Kensho Korona to Gorin"(Covid-19 and the Olympics)
2021年12月に河出新書から『検証 コロナと五輪：変われぬ日本の失敗連鎖』が刊行されました。本書は、吉見俊哉教授が代表である科研費助成事業基盤（A）「プレ－ポストオリンピック期東京における世界創造都市の積層と接続に関する比較社会学」の研究成果の一部としてまとめられたものです。
もともと本プロジェクトには、院生やポスドクを中心とした若手研究者チームが結成されており、1964年と2020年の東京五輪の前後を通じて、上野・秋葉原・神保町エリアの都市や文化がどのように変化してきたのかを研究していました。ところが、2020年に入ると新型コロナウイルスによって、さまざまなイベントが自粛・中止となっていきました。同年3月に入るころには、私たちはオリンピックが中止、あるいは延期になることを見越して、この歴史的な転換を記録するべく行動しました。研究室では国内外の報道を録画できる環境を整え、過去の報道についてはメディアスタジオの録画システムを活用しました。また若手チームは各国の報道、ネット上での五輪に関する言説、世界各地のスポーツを含むライブイベントの中止、延期等の情報を記録していきました。
延期決定後の五輪をめぐる騒動は、各種メディアが報じた通りです。コロナ禍によって、五輪がもつ根本的な問題が浮かび上がってきました。そこで私たちは2021年の東京五輪閉会を見届けたタイミングで、「五輪とは何だったのか」ということを問うことにしたのです。
2021年6月以降、オンラインで研究会を継続的に開いてきました。全体の方向性を共有しつつも、各章を担当する若手研究者が問題設定や分析枠組みを設定し、それを吉見先生と議論するという形式を取りました。若手チームが主体的に研究を行う環境を吉見先生は提供してくださいました。
若手研究者にとって、新書を刊行するという経験は貴重なものになりました。特に、プロの手による校正はあらためて資料を引用する際の厳格さ、伝える文体とはどのようなものかを実践を通して学ぶことができ、また共同で研究することの楽しさを実感することができたと思います。

In December 2021, Kawade Shinsho published Kensho Korona to Gorin: Kawarenu Nihon no Shippai Rensa (Covid-19 and the Olympics: A Series of Failures in an Unchanging Japan). This book was compiled as a part of the results of a research project, headed by Prof. Shunya Yoshimi, funded by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science.
A team of young researchers, mainly consisting of graduate students and post-doctoral fellows, has been involved in this project to study how the city and culture of the Ueno, Akihabara, and Jimbo-cho area changed before and after the 1964 and 2020 Tokyo Olympics. However, in early 2020, various events were cancelled or postponed because of Covid-19. Consequently, around the beginning of March 2020, in anticipation of the Olympic Games being cancelled or postponed, we set out to record this historical shift. We set up an environment in our lab where we could record domestic and international news reports, and for past reports, we used the recording system of the Media Studio. The young team also recorded news from various countries, online discourse on the Olympics, and information on the cancellation and postponement of live events, including sports, around the world.
After the decision was made to postpone the Olympics, there was an uproar over the Olympics as reported by various media. Covid-19 seems to have brought to light fundamental issues about the Olympics. Therefore, we decided to ask the question, “What was the Olympics all about?”
Since June 2021, we held research meetings continuously. While sharing the overall direction of the project, we adopted a format in which young researchers in charge of each chapter set the problem and analytical framework in discussion with Prof. Yoshimi, who provided an opportunity for the young team to conduct research independently.
For the young researchers, the experience of publishing a book has been invaluable. In particular, proofreading by professionals taught us the rigor of citing materials and ways to convey information through writing. It also gave us a sense of the joy of collaborative research.
