Ed-AI研究会Ed-AI Research Group

The EdTech Research Center (Director: Noboru Koshizuka) of the University of Tokyo established the Ed-AI Research Group on May 17 as an industry-academia joint research group to realize tailor-made education using AI (Artificial Intelligence) related technologies, and started full-scale activities in June. I (Koshizuka) serve as the chairman, my colleague at III, Professor Kazuo Hiraki, serves as the vice chairman, and former Keio University Professor Yuichiro Anzai has been appointed as an executive advisor.

Ed-AI is a combination of Education and Artificial Intelligence (AI) and is encompassed within the wider concept of Ed-Tech. EdTech stands for Educational Technology and is an initiative that combines technologies in various fields, including information and communication, with educational theory and practice to promote learning. So far, EdTech has made it possible to provide an education and learning environment to a massive number of people at the same time, as represented by MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses).

Ed-AI aims to provide a system that supports the development of diverse human resources who can create new values for an increasingly complex society, based on the EdTech initiatives to date. Ed-AI will maximize the use of advanced technologies in the field of computer science, such as AI-related technologies and data science for handling learning data, and aims to provide a high-quality education and learning environment for anyone, anytime, anywhere, according to individual aptitude and learning progress. In addition, we will create an environment that facilitates the provision of tailor-made education using AI, including a platform that gives maximum consideration to the privacy of learners and handles learning data appropriately and safely.

In addition to conducting experiments on tailor-made learning support using AI, the Ed-AI Study Group plans to conduct research on the standardization of learning data and its utilization, which are necessary to enable AI to support education, and to compile recommendations.

The study group will also collaborate with the Cabinet Office’s “Strategic Innovation Program (SIP) Phase 2: Cyberspace Infrastructure Technology Using Big Data and AI” to promote the latest research and development trends in AI-based tailor-made learning support.
