An exhibition titled the University of Tokyo iiiExhibition 2021 Extra “0PUNK” was held online for four days from July 9 (Fri.) to 12 (Mon.), 2021. This exhibition is held every November as a part of the curriculum of the Graduate School of Interdisciplinary Information Studies. In this media art focused exhibition, participating students are responsible for everything including organizing, concept setting, and artwork creation. July’s version is a pre-exhibition for the main.

As last year, the exhibition was held online due to Covid-19. In addition, on July 10 (Sat.), we presented a webinar as a project of the University of Tokyo’s Open Campus for high school students.

As described in the following statement, the concept of “0Punk” was presented as a response to the current situation, where our familiar world has been transformed by Covid-19 and new standards are being demanded:

Punk originated by the resistance against the old system.
We were suddenly urged by the strong energy of PUNK.
Why do people always complain or have questions?
It is time to break fixed ideas and conventional wisdom.
Then enjoy imaginable space beyond the expressive limitation.
Let’s try something new, starting with resistance.

“0” signifies the online and the place where something new is born. Participants tried to overcome conventional wisdom according to the concept of “PUNK”.

Team members were mainly composed of GSII graduate students and III undergraduate research students, and every member thought about how to express “PUNK” to make unprecedented works with the help teachers. Furthermore, students paid attention to the user experience to allow visitors to enjoy the exhibition even though it was held online. Finally, almost 2000 people visited our pre-exhibition. Examples of visitors’ comments are the following: “It was like a real (onsite) exhibition!”, and “It was so interesting because works are based on not only their academic research, but their own perspectives. “

Despite the many restrictions, it was a precious opportunity to develop skills for reversing disadvantageous conditions. With this experience, we are devoting ourselves to our studies for the upcoming exhibition in November. To conclude, we would like to express our sincere gratitude to all those who helped to make this exhibition possible and all the visitors.
