開催報告:佐倉統教授退官記念行事「知をつなぐ、学をめぐる」Event Report: Professor Osamu Sakura's Retirement Commemorative Event "Connecting Knowledge, Going Around Academia"
2025年3月19日(水)、佐倉統教授退官記念行事「知をつなぐ、学をめぐる」が情報学環・福武ホール地下2階福武ラーニングシアターにて開催されました。本イベントは、3月末をもって情報学環を退官する佐倉教授が、25年間にわたる学環での研究・教育を関係者とともに振り返り、学際的な活動のこれからを考えるという趣旨で企画されました。
はじめに佐倉教授が概要説明として、研究の根底にある連続性と境界、連続と非連続への関心について、幼少期に太平洋や富士山を見て疑問を抱いた経験を交えながら語りました。霊長類の群れの観察から科学コミュニケーションに至るまでの研究遍歴についての話題では、動物の群れに見られる様々な機能と状況に応じた集団のあり方への変化に対する興味、大学院時代に論文投稿で苦しんだことから得た問題意識、芸術作品と環境の関係や言葉の意味と文脈の関係など、様々な領域における連続と非連続の問題へと関心を広げていった過程が語られました。
次に行われた座談会は三部構成で、大島まり教授、関谷直也教授、原島博 元学環長がそれぞれ登壇し、科学技術を一般の人に伝えること、東日本大震災を踏まえた科学技術と社会の関係、情報学環・学際情報学府の歩みと学際性を促す工夫について話し合われました。さらに途中から各テーマに関係するOBOGも参加し、院生時代に身につけた学際的視点や研究の思い出を語り合いました。
行事は現地とオンライン配信合わせて200名以上の参加があり、盛況のうちに終了しました。参加者からは「もっと佐倉先生のことを知りたくなったイベントだった」という声も聞かれました。
懇親会においても、関係者からの挨拶の中で、佐倉教授の人柄を象徴するエピソードが数多く披露されました。先生方、OBOG、他研究室の院生や学環のスタッフとの交流も活発に行われ、学環学府で、佐倉教授のもとで研究ができて本当によかったと改めて感じる時間となりました。最後に研究室有志によるフォト&メッセージブックと花束の贈呈があり、幕を閉じました。

On Wednesday, March 19, 2025, Professor Osamu Sakura’s retirement commemorative event titled “Connecting Knowledge, Going Around Academia” was held at the Fukutake Learning Theater on the B2 floor of the Fukutake Hall at the Interfaculty Initiative in Information Studies. This event was organised to provide an opportunity for Professor Sakura, who will be retiring from the Interfaculty Initiative at the end of March, to look back on his 25 years of research and education with colleagues and to consider the future of interdisciplinary activities.
The event began with Professor Sakura providing an overview of his research, speaking about his fundamental interest in continuity and boundaries, and the relationship between continuity and discontinuity, while sharing questions he had when observing the Pacific Ocean and Mount Fuji during his childhood. On the topic of his research journey from observing primate groups to science communication, he described his interest in the various functions of animal groups and how they change according to circumstances, the awareness he gained from his struggles with paper submissions during graduate school, and how his interests expanded to issues of continuity and discontinuity across various fields, including the relationship between artistic works and environment, and the relationship between word meanings and context.
The subsequent panel discussion was structured in three parts, featuring Professor Mari Oshima, Professor Naoya Sekiya, and former Dean Hiroshi Harashima, who respectively discussed communicating science and technology to the general public, the relationship between science, technology, and society in light of the Great East Japan Earthquake, and the development of the Interfaculty Initiative in Information Studies and Graduate School of Interdisciplinary Information Studies and its efforts to promote interdisciplinarity. Former students involved with each of these topics joined the discussion midway, sharing memories from their research and the interdisciplinary perspectives acquired during their graduate studies.
With over 200 in-person and online participants, the event was well-attended and came to a successful conclusion. Some participants commented, “It was an event that made me want to learn more about Professor Sakura.”
During the reception, many anecdotes illustrating Professor Sakura’s character were shared in greetings from colleagues. There was lively interaction among faculty members, alumni, graduate students from other laboratories, and staff of the Interfaculty Initiative, creating a time for everyone to reaffirm how grateful they were to have been able to conduct research under Professor Sakura at the Interfaculty Initiative and Graduate School. The event concluded with the presentation of a photo and message book along with a bouquet from the lab volunteers.
