Extra2020「WHO ZIPS YOU?」iii exhibition Extra 2020 “WHO ZIPS YOU?”

今回のコンセプトは「WHO ZIPS YOU?」

An exhibition titled iii Exhibition Extra 2020 “WHO ZIPS YOU?” was held in the internet space for 4 days from July 3 to 6, 2020.

The exhibition is one of the practical classes given by the GSII and the students are involved in the planning and production of the exhibition. The exhibition is being held in two parts: the main exhibition in November and the prelude to the exhibition, called Extra, in July. The class began with a discussion of whether to hold the exhibition and the form of the exhibition, considering the influence of COVID-19. Finally, we decided to hold the exhibition only in Internet space. It was an unprecedented challenge for us but we are glad that we were able to hold this event successfully.

The concept of the exhibition was “WHO ZIPS YOU?”
We started designing the exhibition from the question “What causes inconvenience?”. Under the COVID-19 pandemic, we are confronted with various inconveniences. For example, we were unable to take classes on campus and meet other students in person. We could not even meet with other members of the team to create our work. There are nevertheless manythings that have become possible precisely because of the current situation. What may appear at first glance to be inconvenient may allow us to find new freedom if we change our perspective. We planned this exhibition to share this message.

The exhibition was attended by over 1,000 people from all over the world. Not only that, we received a wide range of feedback from visitors to the exhibition via voice chat and SNS. Some of the works exhibited showed the presence of others in the Internet space and some of them were achieved by combining online presence with real-world things. There were many works on display that sought to express themselves in new ways or in ways only possible via the Internet. Even though the Internet space may seem to be an “inconvenient” place for expression, we are confident that visitors gained some sense of freedom from our works. We ourselves have rethought the meaning of “inconvenience” during the exhibition.

The 22nd iii Exhibition, which is our compilation of the class, will be held in November 2020. Details of the exhibition will be announced on the website and SNS. Preparations are already underway for an even better exhibition of further improved works based on the experience of Extra. We look forward to seeing you at the next exhibition.

Details and images of the works displayed in this exhibition are posted on our website. Information about the displayed works and other information is also posted on a number of SNS sites.
