Yearend Seminar of the “New Literacy for Media Infrastructure Project”

http://infra.mediabiotope.com

The research community of Shin Mizukoshi Lab has been working on the “New Literacy for Media Infrastructure Project” since April 2019. This project aims to establish new media theory and design educational workshop programs in the era of media infrastructure – from Facebook, Twitter and Google as well as the Internet itself – that has become part of our daily lives in the past two decades. On March 16, a seminar that served as a wrap-up of the first year of the 3-year project was held at the University of Tokyo.

In the age of mass media, media literacy evolved while centering on the critical thinking of media contents, such as TV programs. While such conventional media literacy continues to be important, we believe that in the digital age, it is crucial to promote literacy of the media infrastructure that supports the messages, as the nature of the infrastructure frames the contents and the communication phenomenon, but this has yet to be studied in depth. Thus, the goal of the project is to nurture critical thinking towards the function, structure and design of media infrastructure, not only from technological viewpoints but also from political, economic and cultural perspectives. (Details of the project can be seen here: http://infra.mediabiotope.com )

During the March 16 seminar, some members of the project introduced the result of the pilot experiment of the workshops. Meanwhile, speakers including Osaka Sangyo University professor Kazunori Mizushima, Musashi University Professor Yu Nakahashi and Tatsuya Kawase of Yahoo! JAPAN were among the panelists who discussed their views on the media infrastructure and the direction of media literacy.
