Window to the Past

The history before Kyoto Railway Museum started
“Window to the Past” is a tablet-based virtual reality system that enables us to explore, with high realistic feeling, the Modern Transportation Museum, which was closed in April 2014.
On April 29, 2016, the Kyoto Railway Museum opened to the public and you can try “Window to the Past” at the opening memorial exhibition, “The history before Kyoto Railway Museum started”.
The Museum is based on two past museums, “Umekoji Steam Locomotive Museum” and “Modern Transportation Museum”.
Umekoji Steam Locomotive Museum was expanded and modernized, and was combined with Modern Transportation Museum in Bentencho, Osaka.
Window to the Past let us know the history of Kyoto Railway Museum, and enables us to be more interested in exhibits in the museum.

“Museum of a museum”
Window to the Past enables us to interactively explorer virtual environment of Modern Transportation Museum, constructed with a large sequence of spherical images.
Intuitive interfaces for looking and moving in virtual environments are developed, and makes us feel as if we are in the archived space across time and space. Moreover, taking advantage of putting the information, such as explanation or movie, on the space, users can easily understand the background information about exhibits.
Hirose-Tanikawa-Narumi Laboratory has developed effective ways of exhibiting in museum based on the technology of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR).
“Window to the Past” is also one of these ways of exhibiting and “archiving the space itself” characterizes it.
Window to the Past makes it possible to explorer the museum which has already disappeared, so it can be mentioned as “museum of a museum”.
