Interdisciplinary Graduate Program "Digital Humanities"

Applying new methods to humanities research using digital technology

The Interdisciplinary Graduate Program in Digital Humanities is one of a number of interdisciplinary educational programs offered at the University of Tokyo.

The interdisciplinary educational programs at the University of Tokyo were established with the bold aim of meeting new intellectual challenges that cut across the boundaries of existing disciplines, producing “intellectually tough” students with flexible powers of thought. These programs are not constrained by the existing division between undergraduate and graduate education.

The development of digital technology and network systems has revolutionized the way in which human knowledge is preserved, researched and transmitted, leading to the creation of a new intellectual infrastructure for modern society. This change has produced an urgent need for the establishment of “digital humanities” to develop interdisciplinary research methodologies for the construction, analysis and publication of archives of digital material.

The Digital Humanities Program seeks to create organic and cyclical links between the following three endeavors: (1) archiving of research materials in the humanities using digital technology, (2) image and text analysis of digital contents, (3) presentation and exhibition of research achievements. Classes taught in this program therefore aim for an interdisciplinary integration of the humanities and information sciences. Students will learn how to apply new methodologies in the humanities, enabling them to advance academic research from numerous perspectives. The program aims to produce scholars and professionals with critical skills applicable in a wide range of fields in the ever-diversifying information society, who will bear responsibility for the preservation, management and development of knowledge and culture in the future, including both interdisciplinary scholars of the humanities with the ability to critically apply digital technology to research tasks and information scientists who will make creative contributions to the construction of an intellectual infrastructure of digital contents.

The classes offered by this program are for graduate students at the University of Tokyo. The program welcomes not only students in the humanities but also engineering students with an interest in collaborative work with the humanities. The classes are divided into “Core Subjects”, “Basic Subjects” (Survey & Archiving, Analysis, Presentation & Exhibition) and “Related Subjects”. Students who complete the required Core Subjects and obtain at least 12 credits will receive a “Certificate of Program Completion”. (Students may also take classes on an individual basis without any intention to complete the program.)
