1971年東京生まれ。米国コロンビア大学大学院で修士号（社会学）、英国ロンドン大学大学院ゴールドスミス校で博士号（コミュニケーション）を取得。明治大学商学部専任教授等を経て2023年に東京大学大学院情報学環に着任。メディアと国際移動、人種・ジェンダー、文化生産、若者、ケア労働、エスノグラフィー方法論などをテーマに調査研究を実施。

日本語著書に『文化移民――越境する日本の若者とメディア』（新曜社、2008、第2回内川芳美記念マス・コミュニケーション学会賞受賞）、『現代エスノグラフィー』（共編著、新曜社、2013）、『働く母親と階層化』 (共著、勁草書房、2022)他。

グローバルな社会現象に関心があります。アメリカの大学院では社会学の理論・方法論を、イギリスの大学院ではコミュニケーションとカルチュラル・スタディーズを学びました。これらを土台に、社会学的なアプローチを用いて、以下のテーマについて研究を行ってきました。複数の現場でエスノグラフィー調査を実施しています。
- Biography
She received a master’s degree in Sociology from Columbia University in New York, and a Ph.D. in Communications from Goldsmiths, University of London. After teaching at Meiji University and other institutions, she joined the Graduate School of Interdisciplinary Information Studies in 2023. She has been conducting ethnographic research on various topics—including culture, media, race/gender, youth, and care work—across multiple field sites.

I am interested in understanding global social phenomena. My academic background spans multiple disciplines and locations: I studied sociological theory and methodology at Columbia University in New York, and communication and cultural studies at Goldsmiths, University of London. Drawing on these foundations, I approach my work sociologically, and have conducted ethnographic research at multiple field sites. My current research interests fall under the following four themes:
1．トランスナショナルなメディアと移住
国境を越えるメディアがどのように人の国際移動を促すのか、また移住後、ナショナルなアイデンティティはどのように変化するのか、長期間の調査を続けています。
2．グローバルな文化生産
NY、ロンドン、パリなどグローバル都市の文化産業は、多数の専門職移住者を引きつけています。国境を越える文化生産をテーマに、アート、ファッション、食に関わる産業のケースについて調査を行ってきました。
3．ケア労働とテクノロジー
AIやメディア技術の発展は、女性たちが行ってきた育児や介護などのケア労働やその価値にどのような変化を引き起こしているのか。プラットフォーム経済、シェアリング・エコノミー、 人種とジェンダーの交差性に着目し日本のケースについて考察を進めています。
4. ソーシャルメディアと若者
ソーシャルメディアの普及・利用が、若い世代の意識や行動にどのような影響を与えるのか、位置情報と政治情報を対象に共同研究を行っています。
5. エスノグラフィー方法論
エスノグラフィーの方法と授業でのトレーニング法について研究しています。

1. Transnational Media and Migration:
I have undertaken long-term investigations into how transnational media shapes patterns of international migration and influences the transformation of national identity among migrants.
2. The Global Field of Cultural Production:
Cultural industries in leading global cities—such as New York, London, and Paris—attract a highly skilled, internationally mobile workforce. I explore the global field of cultural production that crosses national borders, with a particular focus on art, fashion, and food industries.
3. Care Work and Technology:
I examine how the rise of AI and emerging media technologies is reshaping the value and nature of care work, such as childcare and elderly care, which is predominantly performed by women. My analysis pays close attention to platform economies, the sharing economy, and the intersectionality of race and gender in Japan.
4.Social Media and Youth:
In collaboration with other researchers, I investigate the impact of pervasive social media use on young people, including how they engage with location-sharing and navigate political information in Tokyo and London.
5. Ethnographic Method:
I study ethnographic methods and approaches to training students in these skills within classroom settings.
