Welcome Party for New Students 2017

A welcome party for entering students was held at the GSII on 4th April, 2017. Because the party was held in the same room where research presentations by senior students had been held, more students and professors participated than we had expected. There were 110 people in total, including 70 new students and about 40 senior students and professors, making the usually spacious classroom seem very small. We wish we had prepared much more pizza because it soon disappeared.

Prof. Sakura, the Dean of the GSII gave a KANPAI speech at the opening of the event, and then a quiz competition related to UTokyo and GSII was held. We tried to make this competition full of fun with questions about important information that students should know, such as “how many units are required for completion” and “where are certificate issuing machines operating until late at night”, to trivia about our professors. As a result, no teams got a perfect score, but the team who got the correct answer for 8 out of 10 questions won the grand prize, which included books, CDs and stationery items.

In addition, “Actiii,” which is a student association working to support friendships in the GSII, announced an event where students can have lunch with professors (Actiii_lunch). It was announced that the first guest would be Prof. Sakura. Many new students showed interest, and some took photos of the slide on the screen with their smartphones.

Since we are in the Graduate School of Interdisciplinary Information Studies doing research in a wide variety of academic fields, we believe it is very important to maintain relationships between students and professors across the different fields. We hope that this welcome party organized by senior students will continue as an annual event in the future.

Finally, we would like to cordially thank all the students and professors who donated money or items for the quiz prize. We look forward to your continued support next year as well.
