To all students in the GSII and III

I would like to take this opportunity to express an opinion about tweets posted by Project Associate Professor Shohei Osawa on December 12th which ridicule and defame the ITASIA Program of the GSII and contain insinuations about the “urgent cleansing” of certain ideas.

As an educator, and as a researcher, I find such statements to be utterly unacceptable. Besides feeling outrage against these statements, it is entirely understandable that students and faculty will feel hurt, saddened and disturbed by them.

As Dean of the III, I deeply regret that I have not been able to prevent such statements being made repeatedly by a Project Associate Professor, a person who is in the position of an educator. I offer my sincerest apologies for this.

I reaffirm my promise to investigate the circumstances related with this issue and measures to prevent any future occurrences. As previously reported, an investigative committee has been established, and appropriate measures will be taken in the near future.

One of the great strengths of the III and GSII is the diversity of its students. As Dean, I will do whatever is necessary to restore a secure environment in which diverse people from around the world can engage in free and vigorous discussion and pursue research to the highest level. The ITASIA Program is indeed a symbol of such an environment. We retain our commitment to the principle that diversity is precisely that which enriches learning and leads human beings to higher intellectual attainment, and we will take concrete measures to ensure the realization of these ideals.
