2017年度「メディア研究のつどい」第1回講演会「英国メディアとBrexit」

Theme:
英国メディアとBrexit
The British Media and the European Referendum

There have been attempts to describe the British European referendum as a
grass roots revolt delivered by social media.  If it was not a grass roots
revolt – it was delivered by the mass media. Social media played a role in
disseminating material but the decision to withdraw from the European Union
was orchestrated by the British tabloid press. Television and the BBC in
particular, followed an agenda that was set by the tabloids and based on
tactics that we have learned to recognise from the Trump campaign.  The
tabloid press (with the exception of the Daily Mirror) had campaigned
against Europe for decades and bombarded their readers with pro-Brexit
propaganda throughout the campaign while the BBC covered the campaign as
though it was a battle between two wings of the Conservative party. The
greatest failure lay with the BBC which failed to fully inform the public
about the issues. It was content to focus on the kind of ‘game playing’
coverage that is known to undermine trust.

Lecturer:
Professor Angela Phillips
University of London, Goldsmiths

Professor Phillips teaches journalism and journalism studies and is active
in journalism research.  She established the MA Journalism, MA Digital
Journalism and initiated the joint honours BA Journalism in conjunction with
the Department of Computing, as well as convening all other undergraduate
journalism courses.
In 2009, she launched EastLondonLines a local, multi-media, news website
that is run by Goldsmiths students and has a significant local audience.
She has been a journalist for over forty years, starting in the alternative
and feminist press of the 1970s and moving on to work for national
newspapers, magazines, television and radio (the BBC and independents). She
trained initially as a photographer and worked for several years as a
photojournalist before moving into print and online media with occassional
forays into TV and radio.
Her research interests cover: democracy and journalism, ethics, working
practices, the changing audience for news and changing news consumption
behaviour.  She works with the Goldsmiths Leverhulme Media Research Centre
