Social Tie-ups and Research Projects

The III aims to be an academic institution open to society at large. It is therefore involved in a variety of social partnership projects. It gathers a wide range of opinions and involves external representatives in its operations through the External Advisory Committee.

Based on the core concept of creating new knowledge about information, the faculty of the III are engaged in numerous interdisciplinary research and educational projects in close cooperation with people in the wider society. These projects cover a range of fields, including philosophy, engineering, art, political economy and computer science. In addition to winning funding for large-scale research projects from competitive public programs, the III participates actively in cooperative research through the privately funded projects listed below.

External Advisory Committee

This committee includes experts from private corporations, academia, and the mass media, who provide opinions and advice for the further improvement of research and education at the III/GSII.

Benesse Department of Educational Advanced Technology (BEAT)

Benesse Department of Educational Advanced Technology (BEAT)

Based on a grant from the Benesse Coorporation, this project investigates ways to create learning environments suited to individual learners' circumstances through the use of advanced ICT.

Dentsu Communications Dynamics Project

Dentsu Communications Dynamics Project

Based on a grant from Dentsu Inc., this project designs social structures harmonized with ICT from the overall perspective of media, communication and eco-systems.

Oki Ubiquitous Services Project

Based on a grant from Oki Electric Industry Co., this project develops technology for the innovation of ubiquitous services and conducts research on how to distribute and organize such services.

Sponsored Research Project on Ubiquitous Computing Social Infrastructure

Based on a grant from Toppan Printing Co., Ltd., this project is involved in the development of infrastructural ubiquitous computing technology, analysis of the effects of such technology on society, and investigation of ways to establish and systematize basic knowledge.

Research Initiative for Advanced Infrastructure with ICT

Based on grants from the Metropolitan expressway Co., Ltd., East Japan Railway Co., and Hitachi, Ltd., this project is involved in the advancement of facility management functions and infrastructural innovation.

International Tie-ups & Research Projects

International Tie-ups and Research Projects

In response to globalization and the intensification of international competition, the III is pursuing a number of strategic international partnerships. The aim is to build a worldwide network of scholars and organize an "intellectual movement" to lead the global information society. This will further enhance educational efforts to cultivate human resources with a global scholarly perspective and the skills to fulfill an international mission while contributing to society.

The III has established mechanisms for the reception of students and researchers from overseas. It has also concluded exhange agreements with universities outside Japan and provides support to Japanese students and researchers who go abroad to pursue their studies or research, or participate in international conferences. A number of specific projects are listed below.

Gakkan Gakufu Global Initiative (GGGI)

As a response to the emergence of a vast borderless information society covering the entire Asian continent, this initiative implements broad international education and seeks to produce researchers and professionals with a broad global perspective.

Center for Contemporary Korean Studies

With comprehensive support from the Korea Fondation, this center is to become an advanced center for the study of contemporary Korean politics, information and culture, building mutual links between the intelletual worlds of Japan and Korea.

Educational Program for Young Scholars on "Asian Globalization Studies"

Building on a close-knit network of relations with overseas universities, this program privides support to encourage Japanese students and young researchers to engage in international research and educational activities.
