Facilities and Research Centers
A number of research centers and other facilities are attached to the III. Each of them plays a role in furthering the III's objectives of pursuing interdisciplinary research and education of the highest global standard. They are equipped with the most advanced information and communication technology and play a key role in developing relations with society at large through public lectures and symposia. Details about each currently existing facility are given below.
III Fukutake Hall
Fukutake Hall is designed to be a "crossroads of learning and creativity" where communities will flourish, dialogue with society will deepen, and new research will be conceived. It embodies a new model of information society based on cultural diversity.
Center for Integrated Disaster Information Research (CIDIR)
In cooperation with the Earthquake Research Institute and Institute of Industrial Science, the III has established this center for interdisciplinary research on disaster-prevention information with the goal of mitigating the human and economic costs of natural disasters.
Multi-media and Socio-information Studies Archive
This is a comprehensive archive of newspaper and other media materials open to the public for research purposes. Work is also being carried out on advanced archiving methodologies.
Research Center for Ubiquitous Information Society Infrastructure
This is a research center for the establishment of an information infrastructure incorporating ubiquitous computing technology and for its application in the solving of contemporary social problems.
Media Contents Research Initiative
Media Contents Research Initiative seeks to promote academic research on media contents and the creation of an educational structure for human resource training through diverse cooperative projects with international and industrial organizations.
III Library
This library holds a large collection of scholarly publications and journals on socio-cultural phenomena related to information, media and communications. These materials are made available to researchers and students.
Center for Contemporary Korean Studies
With the comprehensive support of the Korea Fondation, this center is to become an advanced center for the study of contemporary Korean politics, information and culture, building mutual links between the intellectual worlds of Japan and Korea.
